What tools are others using for modification to structure - I don't like the phpmyadmin tool very well and I have .sql files for creating new dbs but would love to know what others are using!!!

I am sure HM does not want their forum used to find 'hack' sites for 'illegal software'

Your 'illiterate' post has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand.

not sure if it's possible to to connect over the net but aside from phpmyadmin (which i like) there's mysql administrator - a free GUI-ish admin tool available from mysql.org

Oh my, what a good forum start, already the first joker asking for pirated scripts, off-topic as well.

Anyway, to add something on-topic: phpMyAdmin is actually the only server-side admin script for mysql I know, but afaik you can have your account set up to allow administration from your home PC. There are a ton of mysql GUIs and administration packages around to install on your PC and then connect remotely to the server. (e.g. http://www.mysql.com/products/tools/query-browser/ and others)

Thank you for ACTUALLY answering my question!!! I thought the same as you about the pirated scripts and off topic! Thanks WannabeArtist for replying!!

If you ask to have external access to your MySQL db then you can use any remote client to manage your databases.

Yeah the official MySQL tools are good for windows. I can't remember where I found the solution, but the text does something wierd and is really small with the default install so you have to edit a setting file (from memory??). Google for the fix. I've recently been moing toward Mac so CocoaMysql is good for that. The MySL tools package is still a bit flakey in the OSX version.

ps. just found the link to the 'small font' fix http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=19528 . It appears you may not have the problem if you haven't tried an earlier version.

Oh and remember that to hook into your hostmonster mysql account from home/work, you need to set things up from your cpanel to accept incoming requests from your home/work ip address. Haven't tried it yet with hostmonster so I'll leave that to you. Happy to help more if you get lost though. :)

Hi,

There is a nice desktop application named Navicat on web http://www.navicat.com/

But, to use it with HostMonster you should take help from hostmonster helpdesk to access your MySQL database with your IP (at home, at office etc).

Navicat is a perfect tool!

Yes, I use Navicat too. It's really a good program.

Unfortunately support have kind of gone quiet for a few days in the middle of me getting external access allowed, so I can't use it yet.

While I appreciate the security measures, having to supply IPs when you are are on a dynamic IP plan is a pain. I should probably organise that now and hope I don't have to reset my modem :)

there is a way around all that.... http://www.dyndns.com/ you go there and download the program set up a account (all free) and now you have a ip that is stuck to your roaming ip...

as for the sql question here is another place http://www.webyog.com/en/ ...

Well, you get a subdomain on one of their domains linking to your IP then, but that doesn't magically create a permanent IP for you, so the problem remains. That is, unless the staff here is willing to set up access for whole subnets, or you can get a fixed IP from your ISP.

yes you are right you get a sub-domain , but your roaming ip is automaticly reassigned anytime it changes.

i guess i did not get the question.... lol

Thanks for the great links now I have some new tools to try out!!! I don't mind the listing the IP with HM deal because they add it instantly for me and it gives me some piece of mind having been hacked with other hosting companies myself the mild inconvenience is worth it!

As I had posted above, you don't get a static IP from dyndns, just a static address, and that won't help you any.

woops I see that now - SORRY - mybad. :)

I did put a support question to dyndns if they offer a 'paid service' for a 'IP' address instead of a name!

Also I talked to HM support and they said they will be adding a tool to be able to add our ip addresses ourselves in the not too distant future :)

Ah, that's good then. Although with software/scripts "not too distant" could still mean anything, but they got it in the works at least.

I use Navicat... love it.. has everything. I develop websites/ecommerce and its amazingly easy to transfer databases etc. using this.

As far as the whitelisting of IP's in order to access the db from anywhere other than localhost, you can whitelist an IP or even wildcard it from the control panel, BUT you must still contact support to allow it through their firewall. While the extra security is reassuring, it is a pain for me personally. You can request SSH access and this means you will no long have to worry about whitelisting IPs.... BUT you need to send them valid government photo ID (fax or email).

Prior to SSH access, it was a pain... now... very happy.
