There are plenty of free forums or you can spend some cash for vBulletin.
If you spend money vBulletin has some great users that create add-on's called hacks for the boards. Check my sig. I've got quite a few hacks on my site.

For a free solution you can just install phpBB through the cpanel, at the fantastico scripts.

I'm a noob. I can't figure out how to add a forum to my site, even after scouring hostmonster's help and searching online. Anyone have the patience to walk me through it step by step?

Hey there,
Go to your controlpanel (yourdomain.com/controlpanel)
Click 'fantastico' in scripts&stats section
Click phpBB2 in discussion Boards section
On the right it will give a little description and you can see 'New Installation (2.0.21)' or something similar (it's not obvious that this is where you click) click that
follow the instructions
That should be it. It will create the database too.
I haven't used it on hostmonster but I've used fantastico on another host and it's a breeze.
Good luck

i recommend SMF forums with the tinyportal addon.
fantastic to code for and the community is really starting to get going, pumping out block codes and themes.

Yes SMF Forums is more powerful than phpBB forums and better, you can get this from www.simplemachines.org download it and upload it to your 'public_html' directory. Is totally free and very easy to install.
Go to your install.php to install your forum.

Fantastico does have SMF as one of its options for installation.
The top 4, in my humble opinion...
phpBB - This is your best free option if you want a lot of features. The current version has tons of additional tweaks (MODs) supporting it.
SMF - Free & better than 'vanilla' phpBB, but it still lacks additional features. If you want just a plain board (and maybe a few MODs), this is your champion.
vB - Hands down the best software, but it's not free.
IPB - Invision (not free) is the medium between vB and phpBB/SMF. If you're going to pay, get vB. If you don't want to pay, pick one of the first two.

My answer would be rather different i suggest you using myBB it can be intergraded with anything ;) but iam not disapointing others like phpBB SMF or VB etc

I have been using phpbb2 plus for a few months. Its the latest release of phpbb2 with alot of mods already inplace. You can see an example of it and download it at http://www.phpbb2.de/
yeah if you're into tweaking stuff and knew a little php yourself, use phpbb. phpbb can actualy be tweaked into running the entire site, not just the forum.

I personally recommend SimpleMachines forum, it is an excellent and very configurable forum interface. On my own site I have it bridged to my webpage, so members who log into the page are automatically logged into the forum as well.
Click the "Forum" button on the left menu if you would like to see an example of SMF

As an aside, I just looked a the freeridearmy.net site and you have requested footage for a video. Have a look at Elephant's Dream http://www.elephantsdream.org/ . It's an entirely Open Source short animated film that you can use for anything. They even supply the files so you can use the 3d models to create extra footage. It's all done on Blender 3d, an opn source app that I'm pretty sure is available for every platform.
I have one word, vBulletin. It so powerful and support around the net is enormous, not to mention the tons of modifications/hacks out there! I've been using it for few years and hosted one for over a year now. Best $80 (or something) I've ever spent!

phpbb really isn't that hard to install without fantastico. It also has a great "Easy Mod" that makes installing hacks easier. Also, they just came out with the Beta of phpbb3, it has security issues, but once they get those figured out you will be able to ugrade to 3 from to with a converter.
