Here's an idea...

Open a checking account.

Lots of modern banks have ATM cards that can triple function, including a Credit Card number.

I assume that you are gonna give money to your mother anyway, so why not keep the rest safe and put it in the bank. (it helps the economy too, but you'll learn about that later in school.)
