For well over two months I have had an Exchange server using mail.mydomain.com as a SmartHost with no problems. mail.mydomain.com is hosted at HostMonster. Today this started failing with a 550 error. On calling support I was told we MUST use SMTPAuth which is fine HOWEVER that does not work either.

I setup an account to use for sending email, admin@mydomain.com, then setup Exchange to SmartHost off mail.mydomain.com using Authorization Required using the new account setup just for SMTPAuth, admin@mydomain.com. time to test and user "admin@mydomain.com" can send email just fine however as soon as some other user on the Exchange server tries to send an email they get a Verification Failed bounce.

I then turned all the SMTPAuth junk back off and now we can send email again, well for a few hours then again we start getting 550 errors.

Called support and brought them up in chat and that proved more or less useless. Chat said I had to submit a ticket, phone support didn't understand Exchange.

I think only support should be able to handle such a query. But you can always make use of Google Apps for your email requirements. Just Direct your MX records to them & create as many gmail accounts @yourdomain.com . With this you can use any Pop account & client like outlook. The only thing that can be of concern is privacy if at all you are bothered about your emails stored on Google servers.
