For some reason I cannot connect to the FTP, maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Can someone please tell me how do you connect to an ftp account?
I know the simpliest way, if I use the most common way - Internet Explorer, is to just type the host's ip:
For example:

ftp://70.98.54.28:2082 and then I should be asked my login name and password.
For some reason it says it can't establish a connection.

FTP Host Address : yourdomain
user : yourdomain or for subdomain yoursubdomain.domain@yourdomain
Pass : yourpassword

I normally use a real ftp client but I just tried now using Firefox (Macintosh) and found that ftp://username@mydomain.com returned an http request for my password and once that was supplied, I was presented an ftp type listing of my HM space. I don't think that I can actually upload using Firefox unless I run a Firefox extension to do so but I CAN connect. You may be able to do more running a Windows version of Explorer.

Note that in the above, username is my original HM username (the one that is based on the first 8 characters of my domain name).

What you are trying to do is connect to ftp on port 2082. This is the wrong port. 2082 is the port that cPanel's web server is on, the ftp server is not listening there.

Using whatever client you want, simply connect to the ip address (or your domain name) without specifying any ports. It should then default to port 21, which is where ftp actually is.

One method that I have used to get straight in successfully is to enter the following into your address bar:

ftp://userid:password@domainname.com/

haven't had a problem so far. . .
Hope this helps!

Well, when I previewed my post I see the smileys showed (and rather nastily at that) instead of the proper ascii text, even though I have them TURNED OFF! (Gotta ask support!?!)

Any way, the smiley is supposed to be a colon : followed by the letter p as the first letter of password. Ya'd think with smileys turned off I wouldn't have to spell it out phonetically (SHEESH)!
