I think the unlimited hosting is great for developing your site, but for a live site, I have seen a huge drag which is causing me to look for dedicated hosting. Unfortunately Hostmonster does not offer dedicated hosting, so I may have to move my sites once they are complete.

I have been with Hostmonster for a year with Multiple "live" sites and several running db's on them for php pages and their service/support is UNTOUCHABLE and have NEVER had a speed issue - would love to hear what 'drag' you are experiencing - could it be a issue with code possibly.
More later,

I have been with hostmonster for about a month and I'm just waiting for something to go wrong. So far it's been a pretty easy ride.

I have been with HostMoster for 2 months. I experienced some glitches, mostly due to the inefficient scripts that are running. However, their support is great and all problems are solved timely.
Well, I tend to agree Dedicated hosting is important. If they have it, I will be the first to move on.

i've been with Hostmonster for less than a month, i can't say that this is the best hosting privider since my site went down a couple times(they told me HostMonster was under attack), however, they were able to fix the problem quickly after i contacted then. so for the customer service alone i give a A+++. however, for the server's reliablity i have to stick around for another couple months to give a firm conclusion. for the drag issue, since it's a shared server, you would expect your site to slow down during "rush hours"

I am very happy with their plan and support.
However, I've been thinking about heavy traffic and switching over to dedicated if the current shared hosting isn't enough. But then again, what is stopping you getting multiple accounts and running in a farm?
I was thinking of the following configuration: 1 account which acts as the front end handing the requests over to the farm, 5 accounts acting as the farm nodes, and 2 accounts to do the database backend.
Has anyone ever tried this sort of thing with hostmonster?

I have been here for a few months and haven't had a problem that wasn't resolved. I hope Hostmonster keeps growing to suit all the customers they are and will attract. I hope to grow along with them. But what do I know, I'm just a rookie anyway.

I've been here 6 weeks. In that time Hostmonster (and my site) have gone down 3 times, once for a few hours. And those are the times I've happened to notice it.
Also, my site can be quite slow at times.
The service guys are nice, but nice doesn't make up for a lousy product. Hostmonster's not lousy, but they're also not great.

HOSTMONSTER will likely be a smooth operation. Matt Heaton, the president, is also the head honcho at BLUEHOST.COM which is one of the top 2 rated hosting services on ANY rating site you want to look at. We would be fortunate to have the same performance from other day-to-day services. The glitch factor always introduces itself from time to time but service appears to be of primary importance. I suppose you might want to worry if Heaton sells the company.

Let me crarify my original statement..They are great in customer service for the most part. The support is great, but like one person said in one of these posts, sometimes, the site drags due to one reason or another and unless they look at the server they don't know...They tried to blame my code as well, but that was not the problem. It doesn't drag all the time but at times it does. Once it took 8 seconds to load a page, the average attention span is 7 seconds, so that kinda worries me

Hostmonster:
Easy to use
Good prices
Supports more than web editing, phpmyadmin, ssl etc..
cheap domain transfers and new addon domains
and free subdomains
I am VERY happy with this :D

I've been aboard for about a week. I transferred my site from a home server, and have had no issues yet. So far, everything has been on-par with other hosting services I have used in the past.

I do note with some amusement at some of the complaints. While I acknowledge that no one likes to have servers going down or slow page loads from time to time, I don't really think that such issues are worth complaining about for the kind of price that we are paying.
Face it, how many other hosting companies offer you this much value? My experience with Hostmonster is no different from the other web host I use. In the technical field, problems are bound to occur from time to time. As long as it does not occur at an unreasonable rate, which obviously doesn't happen at hostmonster, I think that it's fine.
If anyone thinks that the service is too lousy for the kind of price they are paying, then go and sign up for a dedicated service. You pay more, but consequently, you are entitled to expect more. If you're not willing to pay top dollar, don't whine about having a little problem. Hostmonster is providing a service that you don't get with other shared hosting companies, and those companies charge you at least double.
I don't think the 'you get what you pay for' would support their business plan considering the end result would be HostMonster being known for mediocre service. Would you recommend so-so hosting to your friends?
Downtime happens. Maintenance needs to be done.
Your site(s) lag at times? Welcome to shared hosting. I've found in the past that the most drag happens at the late/early morning hours (I'm EST). It does lag quite a bit at times (as previously said by others) so I hope this issue is at least being reviewed.
Currently though, I'll agree with the comment stated above..."Hostmonster's not lousy, but they're also not great.".

I think I'm being mistaken. What I'm pointing out is that the performance for the price offered by Hostmonster is better than many others out there. There is indeed room for improvement, and Hostmonster should always strive for improvement. I just don't think that it's fair to pass comments about Hostmonster's performance without duly considering the entire package, which includes features, price and service.
Taken as a package, I think Hostmonster overall does very well, although perhaps they are doing better in the other aspects relative to performance. I wouldn't mind better performance. In fact, who minds? :D

I have to jump in here and say that i am also pleased with hostmonster so far.. i have just moved my site over here and added one and fixing to move one other over here. So far VERY Happy.:D

= you get what you pay for. It's pretty hard not to see it wrote that way. Either way, thanks for clarifying your point.
Performance? I don't know compared to others I've used. I'll admit I haven't really watched load times here at this point, but it's hard not to notice a fairly ugly drag with gzip initially applied (not that it's really needed with 999gb of transfer allowed).

I suppose that line has to be read in the context of the entire reply. :p
Anyhow, if I'm have a high traffic site, I'll be hunting for a dedicated server. Shared servers can't gurantee fast loading times.

I've run into countless sites that were veritable slugs. After running a utility such as http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph which, among other things, tells you the OS they are running it was almost always some variant of Microsoft-IIS. Perhaps IIS requires more expertise to squeeze out higher performance.

OK, I have to comment again, sense I'm sure some hostmonster people are seeing this and more than likely are the ones defending hostmonster service.
I have been developing websites for about 5 years with several different hosting companies. I work in technology myself for Yahoo!, So I'm not ignorant in my knowledge of the web world.
Hostmonster's Customer service I would give an A+. The are in line with the ranks of godaddy.
The price is excellent, that is what attracted me to hostmonster.
HOWEVER!!!!! I didn't think that the hosting would SUCK AS MUCH AS IT DOES!!!
Hostmonster hosting F-!!!!!!
Hostmonster is in the business of selling cheap hosting space, not providing a quality product. They are shielding their overloaded servers with A+ customer service.
I understand everyone's point of view saying hostmonster has great customer service, However, if you have a website for business, you cannot afford lag or downtime. Hostmonster has a much higher ratio of downtime and lag than I have EVER seen. The only people I would recommend hostmonster for is testing, developing, hobby, or personal sites. But if you plan to make 1 cent off of your site, DO NOT HOST WITH HOSTMONSTER (at this time at least) Once they get there stuff together I will be first in line to come back, especially if they offered Dedicated Hosting. For those of you that think your site has no problems, you should try it at high traffice times, during the day. I often get 8 second delays if not longer.
Not all shared hosting sucks as much as this one, but I have 7 sites I'm trying to host, so I thought I would give this a shot, but I guess it's time to go somewhere with dedicated hosting.

Gypsydog;
I can understand your frustrations, however we are not out to provide cheap hosting our mission is to provide outstanding support as well as an outstanding product. Occasionaly things do happend DDos's or possibly a couple users on a box generating load with bad php code or bad mysql queries, for instance we had one user making a query on fifty five million rows. That query took 10 minutes to run. We are constantly making adjustments and now going as far as making sure its the user then letting them know they have outgrown shared hosting its time to look for either VPS solutions in the least but the better option dedicated. If you are seeing issues the best thing to do is contact support via phone or livechat when its happening so we can properly diagnose the issue and determine the best course of action.
Again note our mission is to provide an outstanding product as well as service.

Well, I have been with HM for nine months. I have used several other hosts in the past, but I can't think of any that given me the service and quallity of server that I have gotten from HM!:) I haven't really noticed any HUGE slowdowns and considering the type of service I offer from one of my sites (Versa-Ads) I am impressed! I realize that I will someday need a dedicated server, but I am also hoping that by that time HM will offer them...
Keep up the great work HM!

I don't reccomend people even use gzip in a shared hosting environment. It only ads more load to servers.

btw what's wrong with running a query on 55 million rows ? is this frowned upon ? :p

When that one query takes 10 minutes to run that is an issue, what if they are trying that same query every 5 minutes and what if other users also had that same type of activity going. Imagine Mysql Cpu usage, it often slows the response time on the server causing lag and timeouts.
